I didn't get any sleep during the night before Christmas, so I was pretty much a zombie the entire day. Yay.
Other than that it wasn't bad.

| Stephen Colbert: Glenn Beck Raised The Stupid Bar to Impossible. |
[23 Dec 2009|08:50pm] |
Colbert Dishes On Bush, Glenn Beck, and MSNBC
When Chicago's Second City comedy troupe held a weekend-long 50th anniversary bash, the obvious highlights were Friday and Saturday shows with Martin Short, Steve Carell, Bonnie Hunt, Jim Belushi, George Wendt, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Catherine O'Hara, Harold Ramis, Shelly Berman, Rachel Dratch, Robert Klein, Jack McBrayer and tons more.
There were also panel discussions, including one in which alumnus Stephen Colbert and writers on his "The Colbert Report" held forth. Along the way, they revealed what didn't get said at a controversial Washington engagement, underscored the impossibility of parodying Glenn Beck and wondered just a bit about the comedic forays of serious-minded news hosts like Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow.
With a tape of the hour-long session from Second City, I just watched as Colbert explained the creation of the "well-intentioned idiot" he portrays. ("The character really means well. He's willfully ignorant of what you know and care about. He's not mendacious and stupid. He's innocent and stupid, like a puppy who's urinating on your politics, not destroying your politics.") But a question-and-answer period inspired the best exchanges, starting with one on Colbert's appearance at the 2006 White House Correspondents' Association Dinner.
In character, Colbert created apparent dyspepsia among some portion of his Washington A-list political and media audience. The dinner draws more than 2,500 and is a very curious function, underscoring the depressingly incestuous relations between the political establishment and a few too many journalists, some of whom so deeply crave the acceptance of whoever's in power. It's morphed from a rather staid gathering into a smoochy celebrity gang bang and sucking up to politicians, with media organizations inviting both people they cover and famous actors and other pop culture stars as guests, and doing so with competitive fervor in their search to look hip. [23 Dec 2009|08:44pm] |
Got an email from QmX. When I clicked on the image of the letter from Bad Horse, it took me to here. It says:
"EVIL LEAGUE OF EVIL APPROVED Although not nearly evil enough by half, the designers and engineers at Quantum Mechanix are madder than a box of Ferrets, which more than makes up for their evil deficit (they even spell their name with an "x"; it's almost like they're daring people to find their website).
That's why we at the Evil League of Evil are happy to announce the appointment of QMx as the official makers of Freeze Rays, Death Rays, remote control devices, official statues of the league elite, recruitment posters, t-shirts and other paraphernalia of membership. Rest assured, all devices of mayhem and propaganda have been villain-tested and mother-approved. Stay tuned to this website for further announcements of ELE-sanctioned products. And remember: Think Evil, Think QMx."

| Midnighter #10-17 and The Authority vs Lobo #1 |
[23 Dec 2009|06:24pm] |
Welcome to the last Midnighter post! This entry covers the final two story arcs, "Anthem" (#10-15) and "Assassin8" (#16-20), both written by Keith Giffen. Instead of scans with running commentary, I'll be presenting plot summaries with overall thoughts for these issues.
The creative team on the "Anthem" issues is composed of Chris Sprouse (#10), Chriscross (#11), Rafael Sandoval (#12), and Jon Buran (#13-15) on pencils; Karl Story (#10, 12), Troy Hubbs with Criscross (#11), and Rick Burchett (#13-15) on inks; Randy Mayor (#10-11), Mayor with Darlene Royer (#12, 14), just Royer (#13), and Pete Pantazis (#15) on colors; Travis Lanham (#10, 14), Pat Brosseau (#11), and Steve Wands (#12-13, 15) on letters; Chris Sprouse and Karl Story with Randy Mayor (#10-12, 14-15) and Sprouse with Brian Stelfreeze (#13) on cover art; and Scott Dunbier Scott Peterson on editing with Kristy Quinn as assistant editor. I actually have the trade for this story arc, which I bought when I just getting into The Authority and its related series. (For those not familiar with American comic book lingo, a trade is a collection of individual issues published with more durable binding.)
The "Assassin8" story arc is a different matter as I only have the first two issues; the eBay seller I bought my comics from didn't have #18-20. In any case, the creative team on the first two issues is Lee Garbett on pencils, Rick Burchett on inks, Randy Mayor with Darlene Royer (#16) and WildstormFX (#17) on colors, and Steve Wands on letters, with Scott Peterson as editor, Kristy Quinn as assistant editor, and covers by Garbett, Trevor Scott, and Mayor.
( Midnighter #10-17. )
This post is ending this post on some holiday cheer with The Authority vs Lobo #1, "Jingle Hell!" The creative team on this issue features "Da Giff" on plot, "Da Biz" on art, "Da Grant" on dialog, "Da Ballsy" on letters, "Da Baron" on colors, and "Da Ben & Da Joan" on editing "with seasonal thanks to our spiritual and weapons advisors [sic]." As you might surmise from the credits, the mood of this issue is very irreverent, over the top, and tongue-in-cheek. I'm not very familiar with Lobo, an alien mercenary created by Giffen who, at least in Superman: The Animated Series, killed everyone on his planet for his school science project (he gave himself an 'A').
My thoughts on this issue were 'meh' as the writing and art are both too far out there for my tastes, but behold! I did scan part of one page because I'm a sucker for parental Apollo and it's a nice way to end this pre-Christmas entry.
Happy holidays!

I have a number of items on my list of things to get done before Christmas, including backing up both laptops and packing for Maine/New Hampshire. My dad and I are also cooking Christmas Eve/Christmas dinner; we made the beef stock for the vegetable soup today and will assemble the ribbon jello tomorrow.
My mom and I ate lunch out yesterday at a local restaurant/store. They're known for their pies and we bought two for Christmas (Dutch apple and pecan). The lunch sandwiches were average, but their warm apple cider was delicious. Afterward, we went grocery shopping and I picked up a few library books to read in Maine: Smilla's Sense of Snow by Peter Hoeg, The Alienist by Caleb Carr, Death by Black Hole and Other Cosmic Quandaries by Neil DeGrasse Tyson, Murder Mysteries by Neil Gaiman (which I've already read, but wanted to re-read), Joker by Brian Azzarello, The Dark Knight Strikes Again by Frank Miller, the first volume of Runaways, and the first volume of Fables.
This past Sunday, my mom and I bundled up and went for a walk around the neighbourhood, oohing at all the Christmas lights. We came back just in time for a beautiful pink sunset.

Hi there. So, back in the day (as in, the Kilby days) I ran an e-mail digest out of AOL about the show and I'm trying to round up people who were on it. So...say hi if you were. Yep, that's all.
